The Cat in the Hat

by Gretchen Williams on February 22, 2012

Did you know that The Cat in the Hat took Dr. Seuss nine months to write and that the cat appears in six of Dr. Seuss’ books? We celebrated that crazy cat by making that famous hat on a shirt and into a yummy treat.

To make your very own "The Cat in the Hat" shirt you need: a white t-shirt, paper bag, poster board, X-acto knife, red fabric paint, tape, sponge paint brush, and a black fabric pen!

First make a hat stencil. I just drew a hat on poster board and used an X-acto knife to trim out the red stripes and black hole on the hat.

Place a paper grocery bag in the shirt (so the paint does not bleed through) and tape the stencil on the shirt.

Now gently dab the red fabric paint to make the red stripes. Take the fabric pen and color in the hole black.

Carefully pull off the stencil. Almost there!

Now all you have to do is use the black fabric marker and outline the hat! Have fun sporting your new Dr. Seuss shirt!

"The Cat in the Hat" cookie ingredients: ready to bake sugar cookies, large marshmallows, white frosting, red sprinkles, and white bark coating.

Bake the cookies according to package directions, cool, and frost.

Melt the white bark coating in a small bowl according to package directions. Put the red sprinkles in another small bowl. Dip each side of the marshmallow in the bark coating and then dip in the red sprinkles.

Assemble the cookie hats! Lastly, enjoy your yummy treat!

Such fun shirts…my kids will love them! Did you know you can make stencils out of freezer paper and then iron them onto the shirts that is what I have done to make all sorts of shirts. It is so easy!

Thanks! What a great idea about the freezer paper! I never heard of that before- will need to try! Enjoy, Gretchen
